Sample Writing Piece
I walked onto the beach just as the sun was coming up. It was the first day of September. Squeezing the cold sand in between my toes, I just stood there watching the neon orange circle slowly rise over the horizon. The thin clouds were gradually turning orange themselves. Every now and then I took a sip of my Dunkin Doughnuts coffee. The colors trickled over the water as the sun rose higher. I tried to think about the last time I had seen the sunrise, and not just glance at it as I got ready for work, but really look at it and appreciate it. It had been years.
Just as I was about to turn around and head back to the house, I heard someone hollering from down the beach. I squinted and saw someone waving and running toward me. Suddenly I realized it was my cousin Eva. She was moving so slowly as if her sneaker were made of lead. I smiled and sipped my coffee as I watched her get closer and closer.
“What are you doing here?” Eva asked as she jogged up to me. “You are never up this early on a weekend.” “I know,” I replied. “But I decided last night I was going to watch the sunrise and I actually got up when my alarm went off.” “Very impressive,” she said sarcastically and laughed. Eva was up at five every day to go running. I laughed too and shrugged. “What can I say? Morning’s not my thing.”
